Military departments offer financial aid for the 2023 school year. SMART scholars receive complete funding for their education, internship opportunities, and stipends every year after graduation from the Department of Defense.
The Most Up-to-Date 2023 US SMART Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded for one year up to five years, depending on the program requirements. Students at all levels of education can apply for a scholarship. The application period is always from August to December in the academic fields of engineering, physics, mathematics, architecture, oceanography, and operations research.

Scholarship With No Financial Restrictions
The SMART Scholarship for International Students is a need-based award for academically talented international students studying at an accredited university in the United States. Everything, from tuition and fees to books and living expenses, is covered for four years of college with this Scholarship. To be eligible for the SMART Scholarship, applicants must be non-U.S. citizens who have completed the equivalent of a high school education. In addition, they must be either currently enrolled in or accepted to study at an approved university in the United States to be eligible for this award.

Qualifications Needed
- Applicants must be legal United States, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom residents.
- To be eligible to vote on August 2, 2023, you must be at least 18 years old.
- Have completed at least one summer internship (only for scholars in multiple years)
- The student must be willing to work for the Department of Defense after earning a degree and meeting the criteria
- Requesting financing for at least one year before graduation (starting on the start date of the program)
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical subject within one of the 21 STEM disciplines
- To be eligible for the Scholarship, active-duty military personnel must be separated from service before August 1, 2023.
- Have a transcript from the fall of 2023 OR be enrolled in a graduate program at a university in the United States recognized by the appropriate regional accrediting body?
Members of the National Guard are encouraged to apply. If you are currently enrolled in ROTC and have promised to serve in the military in the future, you are ineligible to apply.

The SMART Scholarship program in the United States only accepts online applications. Applying online with the necessary paperwork is required. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is a merit-based scholarship initiative that provides financial support to active-duty military students majoring in STEM.
